Short answer

Waste tires have been banned from Wisconsin landfills since January 1, 1995. Janesville residents can drop up to 20 a day at the city landfill: $8 each for rims under 24 inches. City of Milton residents can put two a month out with the free Johns Disposal bulk pickup. The Town of Union charges $7 to $45.

By municipality

  • Janesville: $8 per tire under a 24-inch rim, $460 per ton for five or more or for larger rims. Residents only, 20 a day max.
  • Milton: up to two tires a month and eight a year with the monthly bulk collection.
  • Town of Union: $7 to $45 by size at the town center, with a fee for rims.
  • Brodhead: tires are excluded from the June clean-up.

Everywhere else we found no published municipal tire option.

The law

Wis. Stat. s. 287.07(2) bans disposing of a waste tire in a landfill or burning one without energy recovery (Wis. Stat. s. 287.07).

Hiring it out

A hauler adds tires to a load and pays the disposal fee per tire, so ask for the tire price on the quote. See tire disposal.
