Local disposal fees
What Rock County charges if you haul it yourself
The Janesville Sanitary Landfill serves the whole county and is open to the public. Its tipping fee is small next to the price of a hired load: a trailer carrying half a ton is billed $23. What you are paying a crew for is the truck, the lifting, the stairs and the separate trips for appliances, tires and electronics, which Wisconsin keeps out of landfills.
Municipal bulk programs are cheaper still when they fit. Beloit's $20 per item and Milton's free monthly pickup are good deals for one or two pieces at the curb. They do not help when the item is in a basement, the pickup is three weeks away, or the town publishes no program at all. Every town's rule is in the bulk pickup table.

What moves a quote
VolumeThe fraction of the truck the load fills. Photos from two angles are usually enough to estimate it.
WeightPlaster, tile, concrete and shingles weigh far more per yard than furniture, and landfills bill by the ton.
Special handlingRefrigerant appliances (NR 488), TVs and computers (E-Cycle Wisconsin) and tires each go somewhere other than the landfill.
Common questions
Junk removal cost questions
How much does junk removal cost in Janesville, WI?
National cost guides put a minimum or 1/8 load at $70 to $125, a half truckload at $175 to $400 and a full truckload at $400 to $800. Forbes Home gives a national average of $225. Single bulky items run $60 to $150.
What does it cost to haul junk to the Janesville landfill yourself?
$12 for any passenger vehicle load and the greater of $46 per ton or $20 for trucks and trailers, effective January 1, 2026. Janesville residents can bring 96 gallons or less free. Refrigerators and freezers are $15 each; washers, dryers and water heaters are free.
Why do junk removal quotes vary so much?
Price follows volume, weight and labor. The same half truckload can be light furniture or heavy plaster, and a basement with stairs takes more time than a garage at the driveway. The national guides also define a full truck differently, from about 13 to 20 cubic yards.
Is anything extra for appliances or TVs?
Often, because they cannot go to the landfill in Wisconsin. Refrigerant appliances need certified recovery under NR 488, and TVs go to an electronics recycler under E-Cycle Wisconsin. National guides put a major appliance at $50 to $400.
Is a dumpster cheaper than junk removal?
Sometimes, for a multi-day project you load yourself. Junk removal includes the labor and sorts banned items out of the load. Compare a dumpster quote that includes delivery, rental days and tonnage against the load table on this page.
