No mattress recycler in the county

Our research found no dedicated mattress-recycling facility anywhere in Rock County. Mattresses are handled as bulky items through each municipality, or hauled to the landfill. The Town of Union is the only place we found that prices them by size: $10 for a twin, $15 for a full or queen and $20 for a king (Town of Union fee sheet).

Local options, town by town

• City of Beloit: $20 per bulky item, prepaid and scheduled.
• Town of Beloit: $10 per item at the Beloit Recycling Center on Saturdays 9am to noon; mattresses are on the town's list.
• City of Brodhead: accepted at the June curbside clean-up, but only sealed in a plastic bag.
• City of Janesville: no curbside bulk; the landfill charges $12 per passenger vehicle load.
• City of Milton: one free bulk pickup a month via Johns Disposal covers furniture.

What removal costs

Angi and Fixr both give $75 to $150 for a mattress, HomeGuide $70 to $100 and LawnStarter $70 to $130. A box spring is usually counted as a second item. A mattress added to a bigger cleanout mostly just takes up room in the truck, which is why it is cheaper as part of a load than on its own.
